چکیده

A newly described species of empidid or 'dance fly' shows a bizarre polymorphism in their forelegs, which presumably serve as a mating lure. This trait may have evolved by frequency-dependent deceptive male signalling.

Rapid evolution of asymmetric reproductive incompatibilities in stalk-eyed flies.

The steps by which isolated populations acquire reproductive incompatibilities remain poorly understood. One potentially important process is postcopulatory sexual selection because it can generate divergence between populations in traits that influence fertilization success after copulation. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of this form of reproductive isolation by conducting reciproca...

Selection on morphological traits and fluctuating asymmetry by a fungal 2 parasite in the yellow dung fly

11 Evidence for selective disadvantages of large body size remains scarce in general. Previous 12 phenomenological studies of the yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria have demonstrated 13 strong positive sexual and fecundity selection on male and female size. Nevertheless, the body 14 size of flies from a Swiss study population has declined by almost 10% from 1993 to 2009. 15 Given substanti...

Gender differences in survival and antipredatory behavior in stalk-eyed flies

Exaggerated eye span of stalk-eyed flies is a classic example of the evolution of an extravagant male ornament resulting from sexual selection. Increased male eye span may entail costs associated with production and/or maintenance, including potential locomotor costs that may increase predation risk. However, behavioral responses by individuals may alter the relationship between a morphological...

Sex-Specific Selection and Sex-Biased Gene Expression in Humans and Flies

Sexual dimorphism results from sex-biased gene expression, which evolves when selection acts differently on males and females. While there is an intimate connection between sex-biased gene expression and sex-specific selection, few empirical studies have studied this relationship directly. Here we compare the two on a genome-wide scale in humans and flies. We find a distinctive "Twin Peaks" pat...

Convergent evolution of sexual shape dimorphism in Diptera.

Several patterns of sexual shape dimorphism, such as male body elongation, eye stalks, or extensions of the exoskeleton, have evolved repeatedly in the true flies (Diptera). Although these dimorphisms may have evolved in response to sexual selection on male body shape, conserved genetic factors may have contributed to this convergent evolution, resulting in stronger phenotypic convergence than ...
